[It's both hard to see and entirely understandable why someone could love a place like this. There is a reason why criminals have a tendency to reconvict and it's not something as simple as they are just bad people or they simply disrespect the rules. Sometimes what's on the inside is better than what they have on the outside. Either Philip has a very skewed sense of what's good and what's bad or it's sad commentary on the Barge, but he'd rather take the hellhole he just came from over this place without much thought. Not that it isn't a close race between the two, however.]

I prefer to put my energy into something a little less futile.

[Not that he doesn't believe escape is necessarily entirely out of the question. Anything with an entrance also has an exit. But given how long this place appears to have been in operation and he has yet to hear of a single successful escape? That's not where he's putting his money. Besides, it's not as though he has anywhere to go and escaping somewhat requires another destination to head toward.]
