[Something that isn't quite so novel is the idea of a child being forced to take on adult responsibilities quickly. (And that is what Lydia is regardless of whether she believes it or behaves like it.) Admittedly, he had been blind to it at first. He tried to believe that survival was possible while still protecting Penny's innocence, but she paid the price for his willful ignorance. But that was different.
